The ruling is based on a legislation enacted in April 2024. In this situation, ByteDance would be given a period of nine months to divest the social network, with a possible extension of up to 90 days. If not, the platform would face a ban in the country.
Given the approaching deadline, the company encountered a legal dispute with the US government which escalated when the United States Court of Appeals upheld the law, resulting in significant consequences.
The Supreme Court, the highest level of the US judicial system, also voted in favor of keeping the law in place, as reported by the TechCrunch website.
With the ruling, ByteDance must transfer ownership of the platform to another party by the following Sunday, January 19, in order to avoid TikTok being prohibited in the country.
Canaltech reached out to ByteDance but did not receive a response before publishing the article. The article will be updated if the company provides a statement on the matter.
